Student Society of Pediatric Dentistry

The official pre-doctoral student organization in UCSF that is dedicated to the children's oral health.  The group is operated by the students and is led by the elected student leaders, under the guidance of faculty advisor, Dr. Brent Lin. The missions are to promote the oral health in children and to enhance the understanding of children's oral health and the specialty through seminars and educational activities.  Its members participated in various community outreach activities throughout the year with donated time of students, residents, and faculty members. Events and seminars are organized on topics related to advanced pediatric dental care and management and latest scientific advancement in children's oral health.  Panel discussions on the application of residency program and pediatric dentistry externship opportunities are also organized for those who are interested in specializing.  Research opportunities and networking with potential mentors for research on pediatric oral health care are available.  The Student Society of Pediatric Dentistry (SSPD) is an award-winning student organization and has received the 2013 Excellence in Community Partnership Award by the UCSF Chancellor's Office (picture below) and Certificate of Honor by the City and County of San Francisco.

The student organization is also a recognized student group in the National Children's Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF), under the name of UCSF Student United for America's Toothfairy.  It is the first student organization of NCOHF, and its members helped to charter, to name, and to draft the very first organizational structure and template for initiating the new student groups for NCOHF.  SSPD collaborates with other civic organizations and non-profit groups, such as Bay Area Oral Health Zone and Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, to provide oral health education, preventive dental care, dental screening, identifying oral and dental health issues, and referral for dental home and treatment intervention for the underserved children and children with high caries risks in the greater northern California.
