Expert management of cleft lip, palate, and other craniofacial anomalies requires a multi-disciplinary team. Patient outcomes continue to improve as new techniques and technologies are developed. Genetics, presurgical and surgical management, and the roles of the geneticist, plastic reconstructive surgeon, speech pathologist, nurse practitioner, and orthodontist on the craniofacial team are highlighted in this one-day program. Our guest speakers include Michael Cunningham, MD, PhD, presenting on craniosynostosis from a clinical and research perspective and gene discovery. Also, Sally Peterson Falzone, PhD will be discussing how to evaluate and treat speech disorders in children with cleft lip and palate. Janice Lee, DDS, MD will present contemporary information on orthognathic surgical advances in treating craniofacial anomalies. Ophir Klein, MD, PhD will review the most common genetic conditions seen in the UCSF Craniofacial Clinic, including clefting and craniosynostosis syndromes. He will present contemporary approaches to genetic testing, including array CGH and whole exam, and discuss X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia as an example of medical therapy for birth defects. William Hoffman, MD will present advances in reconstructive surgery for cleft care. Our honoree, Karin Vargervik DDS, will provide perspectives on the role of the orthodontist in cleft care.

The day will also include breakout sessions in seminar formats.
