Curriculum Overview

One of three programs of its kind in the United States, the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry offers a three year graduate program leading to a certificate in pediatric dentistry and/or an M.S. degree in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. Appropriately qualified students also have the option of pursuing a PhD degree in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. The program is approved and accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.

All postgraduate professional students will complete a specially tailored core curriculum that includes courses in biostatistics, cariology, biomaterials, developmental biology, oral pathology, behavioral sciences, pharmacology and medical ethics. Instruction in all areas of Pediatric Dentistry is provided through lectures, seminars and clinical training in outpatient clinic and hospital settings. The hospital and surgery center operating rooms provide intensive experience in treating patients with special needs under general anesthesia. While emphasizing the importance of the basic and clinical sciences, the program stresses the relationship of pediatric dentistry to other areas of pediatric health care delivery, and residents will complete clinical rotations in pediatrics, anesthesia, emergency care, out-patient care, and orthodontics.
